Cake Box Cookies

Cake Box Cookies! Have you heard of them? These amazing and simple cookies have taken the internet by storm. They are so easy that they are often referred to as “Lazy Cake Cookies” and you can find many varieties online.

This particular Chocolate Chip Cake Box Cookie recipe has become one of my absolute favorites and I cannot even begin to guess how many times I have made it. A lot!

What I really love about this recipe is that it is so versatile. The ingredients are minimal and you can choose from a multitude of different options when it comes to the mix-ins or toppings.

The basic recipe is a chocolate chip cookie bar. They are absolutely delicious this way! Plain and simple. However, depending on the time of the year (or the event I’m making them for), I also love to substitute the chocolate chips for peanut butter chips, Reese‘s Pieces candy, Reese‘s peanut butter cups, white chocolate chips, walnuts, pecans, M&M’s or anything else I can possibly think of.

I have made them for birthday parties, potlucks, holidays and even wrapped up a batch as a gift many times over.

To get started, mix all four ingredients together. Make sure your melted butter is cooled and not too hot, as it will melt your chocolate chips if it is.

The dough will be very sticky.

Press the dough into a greased 9″x13″ pan. I have found that using a buttered spoon or even buttering my fingers helps, so I like to have a few tablespoons of butter handy.

Then pop the pan in the oven and enjoy the aroma of baking cookies as it fills the air! YUM!

These are incredible right out of the oven. Although making them look festive and decorative is also very easy. You can use any type of colored sprinkles to go with the theme of the event you are planning, drizzle the top with melted chocolate in a zigzag pattern, or use any color of candy melts that you prefer to coat the top or add a pop of color.

One of my favorite ways to decorate these cookies is dipping only one half of the cookie bar into melted white chocolate, then adding sprinkles to the top of the white chocolate to complete the look. I personally love how the flavor of the white chocolate balances out the richness of the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Way too tasty for words!

They’re easy, fast and oh so delicious! I guarantee they will be a huge hit wherever you go.

  1. I definitely want to try making these! I made cake mix cookies before but they turned out too soft. I like your concept of the cookie bar dipped in chocolate! 🙂 I like the cute cookie gift boxes, where can I find those?

    1. Hi Evelyn, you can find the cardboard cookie boxes at Walmart in the party section. They also come with cupcake inserts (so you can gift cupcakes or muffins, as well. Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I do!
